The most requested surgeries
designed to restore hair in areas with alopecia is the hair implant.
Hair transplantation with the FUE technique is the most advanced hair transplant technique, in which follicular units are implanted one by one, thanks to modern technology and a team of specialists with extensive experience.
Am I a candidate for a FUE hair graft technique?
If you present:
- a good density in the donor area (more than 80 follicular units / cm2),
- donor hair of adequate thickness (ideally greater than 80 microns),
- patient over 25 years of age with stabilized androgenetic alopecia or under medical treatment (finasteride and minoxidil),
- Androgenetic male pattern alopecia with clinically visible bald areas in the recipient area (Norwood II-VI scale)
- Ludwig’s grade II-III female pattern androgenetic alopecia, provided it has a good donor density
- realistic expectations

In the first consultation of a FUE technique hair transplant, we take a complete medical history with anamnesis and after exposing your expectations, the surgeon assesses your skin type, alopecia, characteristics of the donor area, etc. After this previous analysis, We share your expectations with you and decide the technique to use.

- postoperative medical check-ups until discharge.
Preoperative
In order for you to have a hair transplant in complete safety, we must assess your general condition based on your possible drug and environmental allergies, personal and family pathological history, habitual and past medication, possible previous surgical interventions, toxic habits (tobacco), etc.
It is also necessary to have a general analysis, chest x-ray and electrocardiogram.
At Guadalupe González Clinic we will also take preoperative photographs, which will help us before, during and after the hair transplant.
Surgical technique
We perform the surgery in the operating room, under local anesthesia.
The intervention usually lasts between 5 and 6 hours, since it is not a complex surgery but it is very delicate in which details must be taken into account for a natural and satisfactory result such as the direction of the hair, the angulation and the follicular density therefore The initial design of the areas to be repopulated is very important, bearing in mind that the transplanted hair will never fall.
The design of the first line is crucial to achieve an absolutely natural result, for this reason we design it in a zig zag, with incisions smaller than 1 mm with follicular units that contain only one follicle and with a certain degree of inputs, since these are present in the vast majority of men at a certain age.
First, the capillary grafts are obtained, which are prepared for subsequent implantation with high-precision instruments that allow microincisions to be made with the appropriate angle and direction to obtain very natural results.
POSTOPERATIVE
The first 48 hours after the hair transplant, a calm life should be carried out, that is, relative rest, applying local cold and a thermal water spray to keep the grafts moistened and the recipient area clean.
Controls and cures should be carried out following the surgeon’s recommendations.
It is normal for inflammation, a sensation of pain, occasional stinging and tingling to appear, which you can calm with antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication. Small scabs will also appear that fall 7-10 days after surgery.
FAQ’s
About FUE technique hair transplantation
1.
Is the hair on the back and sides permanent?
Yes, the hair in the occipital and temporal area is permanent since it has different genetic characteristics that make it last a lifetime, without being affected by androgenetic alopecia, that is, it does not fall due to the action of testosterone or due to genetic causes.
2.
Transplanted hair, can it fall out?
As we have previously commented, as it is a transplanted tissue, the hair continues to maintain its genetic characteristics despite being transplanted in any other part of the body (another area of the scalp, beard, mustache, eyebrows, chest, pubis, etc. .) this phenomenon is called donor dominance, if it falls, it will grow again.
3.
How many hair grafts are needed for a transplant? And how many can be put?
Sometimes, if the alopecia is extensive in the frontal, middle and crown areas, several transplant sessions may be necessary. The number of implanted grafts per session is variable and depends on the surface to be treated, the amount of hair in the donor area as well as its characteristics and the expectations of each patient.
In each session about 3,000 grafts are usually grafted, representing approximately 8,000 hairs.
4.
Hair transplantation, is it painful?
No. This surgery is very well tolerated only with local anesthesia. A previous treatment is carried out, administering a light sedative to relax you and help you rest if you wish. In this way the application of local anesthesia is less bothersome.
Once the tissues have been infiltrated with local anesthesia, you will not notice any discomfort at all, you can even get up if you need to to rest, go to the toilet or drink if you are thirsty.
Once we have finished, a wide and adaptable cap is placed and it is always advisable to be accompanied once you are discharged from the clinic.
5.
Does grafted hair take a long time to grow?
The small hairs that are seen at the end of the surgery fall during the first month, but their root remains in the resting phase (telogen) for 3 months, only a few hairs that have not fallen will continue to grow (anagen phase).
Hair grafts begin to grow asynchronously 3 months after transplantation. This means that the final result can be seen one year after the surgery. After this time, the hair behaves naturally throughout life. Over the years there may also be a slight loss of density of the hair on the head that could also affect the hair graft.
6.
If there is still some hair in the area to be treated, can a hair transplant also be done?
As long as there is enough space between the hair to implant a new follicular unit (approximately 1mm), this hair transplant can be done. Carrying out it in this way has the advantage of gradually replacing the hair without ever appreciating frank alopecia. In these cases, a second or third capillary autograft is usually required throughout life.
This treatment is always recommended to be combined with the usual medical treatment to slow down hair loss in the area to be treated.
The only drawback of this option is that due to the surgical stress, in the treated area all the hair enters the resting phase (telogen) and falls temporarily during the two months following the surgery. From the third month on, both the transplanted hair and the one that fell during this phase begins to grow.
7.
What complications can appear?
Hair autograft following the FUE technique is a safe technique, as long as it is performed by a qualified surgeon. However, as in any operation, there can always be complications and associated risks. In hair transplantation, the most frequent complication that could appear is inflammation. For this we recommend keeping the head elevated, avoiding efforts and cryotherapy. Sensitivity alterations could also appear. These changes are usually temporary. Infection would also be another extremely unusual complication.
