They are designed to remove the skin and bags to rejuvenate the eye contour.
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is a simple surgery that allows your eyelids to regain the vibrancy of their youth.
It consists of addressing excess skin and the “fat bags” of the eyelids that give the look a tired, sad and aged appearance, rejuvenating the periorbital area or the eye contour.

Preoperative
In order for you to have a blepharoplasty with complete safety, we must assess your general condition based on your possible drug and environmental allergies, personal and family pathological history, habitual and past medication, possible previous surgical interventions, toxic habits (tobacco), etc.
It is also necessary to have a general analysis, chest x-ray and electrocardiogram. If necessary, with this study the patient is visited by an anesthesiologist who will verify the results, as well as solve any doubts.
At Guadalupe González Clinic we will also take preoperative photographs, which will help us before, during and after blepharoplasty.
Surgical technique
Blepharoplasty is performed in an operating room with local anesthesia or local anesthesia plus sedation, depending on each patient. A blepharoplasty intervention usually lasts approximately 1h 30 min.
Taking into account that the anatomical structures of the upper and lower eyelids are very different, the problems that can occur are also different.
In upper blepharoplasty, the skin is marked and incisions are made at the limit of the natural fold of the upper eyelid, where the scar will be hidden. Next, the excess skin spindle and a thin band of orbicularis muscle are removed, in order to locate the fat bags and remove the necessary amount. The skin is carefully closed again, suturing small internal stitches that will maintain tension. Finally, thin strips are placed that will protect the scar until the stitches are removed, usually between four and seven days after the intervention.
In lower blepharoplasty surgery is performed transconjunctival or subciliary. In the first, an incision of approximately one centimeter is made behind the eyelid to directly access the bags of fat. In the second, an incision is made under the eyelashes and the skin is dissected. Subsequently, the three compartments are searched and the bags are dried one by one, in just the right amount. Once these accumulations have been eliminated, the intervention is finished by putting a point on the conjunctiva or leaving it without suturing according to the surgeon’s preference, since it is an area that heals very easily.
POSTOPERATIVE
Normally this surgery is outpatient, the patient stays a few hours in the clinic and later can go home, with an anti-inflammatory treatment and protective eye drops. To stop inflammation and possible bruising, the patient should keep the head elevated, avoid straining, and it is advisable to place cold fats on the eyelids. Sunglasses are recommended. The patient should rest well and avoid tobacco. The period of time necessary to have a normal appearance is calculated between one week and ten days, although not the definitive one since the structures are positioned slowly over several months.
FAQ’s
About blepharoplasty
1.
After surgery can bags reappear in the eyes?
The results of eyelid surgery are usually permanent. The bags in the dark circles are usually a problem of accumulation of fat and when it is eliminated, it does not reappear.
2.
When wearing contact lenses, when can they be put back on?
It depends on whether or not there is inflammation in the area. But the usual thing is that they can be used again in a couple of weeks.
3.
If I have other eye problems, can I have a blepharoplasty?
Given that in the first visit a complete medical history is taken with anamnesis if there are any type of eye problems (glaucoma, myopia, etc …) it is advisable to discuss it with the surgeon. In any case, there is usually no problem, since blepharoplasty only affects the skin and eyelid structures, without affecting the patient’s vision.
