Surgical technique

We perform the surgery in the operating room, under local anesthesia.

The intervention usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours. It is not a complex surgery but it is very delicate in which details must be taken into account for a natural and satisfactory result such as the shape and direction of the eyebrow, the angulation and the follicular density. For this reason, the initial design of the areas to be repopulated is very important, taking into account that the transplanted hair will never fall.

The design is crucial to achieve an absolutely natural result, with incisions smaller than 1 mm and with follicular units that contain only one follicle.

First, the follicular units of the scalp area are obtained whose consistency is more similar to the characteristics of the eyelashes. These follicular units are obtained with long hair (2.5 to 3cm) individually (FUE technique) or through a small strip of the scalp (FUSS technique). About 25-30 follicular units can be grafted per eyelid and procedure, knowing that each eyelid has approximately 150 eyelashes, which would represent an increase of 20%.

POSTOPERATIVE

The first 48 hours after the eyelash transplant, a calm life should be carried out, that is, relative rest, keeping the head elevated at least 30 degrees and applying local cold and a thermal water spray to keep the grafts and the receiving area clean. The eyelid area may become slightly inflamed.

Controls and cures should be carried out following the surgeon’s recommendations.

It is also normal for a slight painful sensation or occasional stinging to appear.

At 24 hours after surgery, the treated area will present small scabs that fall 7-10 days after surgery. It is very important that they do not touch or tear each other.

The area may be red for about 15 days. This goes away spontaneously.

FAQ’s

About eyelash transplantation

1.

Is grafted hair permanent?

Yes, the hair in the occipital and temporal area is permanent since it has different genetic characteristics that make it last a lifetime.

2.

Transplanted eyelashes, can they fall out?

Like all transplanted tissue, hair continues to maintain its genetic characteristics despite being transplanted into any other part of the body, such as the eyebrows. This phenomenon is called donor dominance. It must be borne in mind that the “hair” that comes out must be trimmed to the desired length periodically. This hair graft can also be dyed, permed, etc … if desired, but always after the third month.

The final result can be seen from the year, during which periodical controls should be carried out approximately every 4 months.

3.

How many hair grafts are needed for an eyelash transplant?

About 25-50 follicular units can be grafted per eyelid and procedure, taking into account that we have approximately 150 eyelashes per eyelid, which would represent an increase of 20%.

4.

Eyebrow autotransplantation, is it painful?

No. This surgery is very well tolerated only with local anesthesia. A previous treatment is carried out, administering a light sedative to relax you and help you rest if you wish. In this way the application of local anesthesia is less bothersome.

Once the tissues have been infiltrated with local anesthesia, you will not notice any discomfort at all, you can even get up if you need to to rest, go to the toilet or drink if you are thirsty.

5.

Does grafted hair take a long time to grow?

The small hairs that are seen at the end of the surgery fall during the first month, but their root remains in the resting phase (telogen) for 3 months, only a few hairs that have not fallen will continue to grow (anagen phase).

Hair grafts begin to grow asynchronously 3 months after transplantation. This means that the final result can be seen one year after the surgery. Once this time has passed, the hair behaves naturally throughout life, being necessary to cut them to the desired length.

6.

What complications can appear?

Eyelash transplantation is a safe technique, as long as it is performed by a qualified surgeon. However, as in any operation, there can always be complications and associated risks. In the eyelash transplant, the most frequent complication that could appear is inflammation. For this we recommend keeping the head elevated, avoiding efforts and cryotherapy. Sensitivity alterations could also appear. These changes are usually temporary. Infection would also be another extremely unusual complication.
